Book Excerpt
"It was May 14,
1960. Weary from nine hours of labor, I sat upright in the hospital bed
and waited for the nurse to bring my newborn son. I had not seen him since he was born, and I could hardly wait to hold
him. I leaned my head back against the pillow and hot tears dripped down
my cheeks. Moments before, I had read the headlines in the newspaper that
was delivered to my room and in it were reports that Nikita Khrushchev was
breathing out threats to the United States. The nurse walked in with my
son and laid him in my arms. I hugged him tightly, and then unfolded the
receiving blanket. I looked carefully at his fingers and toes, and I
counted them to be sure they were all there. Smoothing his downy-like
hair,I wrapped him up and hugged him close to my bosom. As I began to pray
over him, I broke into sobs. The questions were pouring
from my heart."
